JioFiber to offer 100GB data for Rs 500, will spark price war for wired internet

After disrupting the telecom segment with free 4G data and unlimited voice calls, Reliance Jio is all set to spark another price war, this time in the broadband internet segment. The company is gearing up to launch its Fiber to the Home (FTTH) broadband service in India. This is something India Today Tech had earlier reported exclusively. Now, there is indication that the company will offer the service at very cheap data rates, with one report hinting that the JioFiber plans will start with Rs 500 for 100GB plan.

According to an ET report, Jio is planning to offer 100GB data for Rs 500. This is likely to raise a price war in the broadband market as the other incumbent broadband service providers are offering almost half of this data at the double price.

Jio in November last year had said that it aims to disrupt the broadband market soon and the report by ET hints that this may actually happen. India Today Tech had previously reported that Jio will call the service as JioFiber and it will be rolled out as Preview offer initially. Those who register for JioFiber Preview offer will have to pay a refundable deposit of Rs 4500 as security. The service is expected to offer speeds of up to 10mbps and is currently being tested in six cities and ET reports that the company expand its services from June onwards.

In anticipation of JioFiber launch, competitors have already started preparing for it. Only few days ago, Airtel announced that it will offer 1,000 GB of free data to customers on select broadband plans. The offer is still active on Airtel’s web portal and can be availed by Airtel subscribers who’ve enrolled for Airtel Broadband Services on or post May 16.

As per a TRAI report, currently BSNL is leading the broadband play with 10 million users while Airtel ranks second with 1.95 million users. Here’s a quick look at what BSNL and Airtel are offering under its FTTH services.
